DMOs are undergoing a transformation from marketing organisations to management organisations, from attractors of flows to promoters of quality of life, from an orientation towards growth tout court to an orientation towards sustainable development.
Research, through a survey of Italian regional and sub-regional DMOs, illustrates the level of maturity of DMOs in the development of sustainable tourism strategies based on international standards.
The results are discussed with DMOs that are facing this transformation and with an international reference body in accompanying territories towards sustainability.
